induction hob
Elevate your culinary skills!

Have you shifted to a new country and are struggling with using certain appliances which your country doesn't use? An induction hob or induction cooktop can be one of them. Though there are many benefits of studying abroad, going through some difficulties is very common. Many student accommodations in different countries offer private or shared kitchens for students to cook for themselves. But what if the whole process of using kitchen appliances is alien to international students?

Do not worry; we are here to guide you with a detailed list of every step you need to follow. Also, do not forget to pack all your university essentials before shifting!

What is an induction hob?

Before starting with the steps, let us tell you all the basic things about an induction hob. Cookware is heated directly by electromagnetic fields on an induction hob, a type of cooking appliance. It uses electromagnetic induction to create heat, as opposed to conventional gas or electric hobs, which rely on radiant heat. Cooking can now be done more quickly, precisely, and with less energy use. You can try out some easy recipes for college students which will make your student life more simple-going.

How to use an induction hob?

Induction hobs have an integrated set of induction coils beneath a flat glass-ceramic top. The magnetic field produced by the coils in the hob stimulates electrical currents in compatible pots and pans when you turn it on and place the cookware on it. The cookware's contents are heated as a result of the heat produced by these currents. Because it only receives residual heat from the cookware, the hob itself stays relatively chilly during the operation.

Step 1: Turn on the hob unit at the wall

Make sure it is correctly connected to a power source and turned on at the wall before you begin cooking on it. Make sure the hob surface is spotless and debris-free.

Step 2: Place the correct cookware on the hob ring accordingly

Cooking on it requires specialised cookware. For induction cooking, look for pots and pans that are marked as "induction-compatible" or bear a symbol indicating that they are suitable. Cast iron or stainless steel should be used for the cookware's base because these materials are magnetic. Aluminium and copper, which are not magnetic, cannot be used on them unless a magnetic coating is applied on the bottom.

Step 3: Keep your finger firmly planted on the appliance's power switch

Put the proper cookware on the desired hob ring after you have it. The hob typically contains rings of various sizes, allowing you to tailor the ring's size to that of your cookware. To achieve uniform heating, centre the cookware on the ring. Find the hob's power switch or touch control panel. To activate it, press the power button. You might need to choose a certain ring for some hobs in order to move on.

Step 4: Choose the sensor that corresponds to the ring you want to use to begin cooking

Each hob ring's associated sensor or button is located on the control panel. Choose the sensor or button for the cooking ring that you want to use. Usually, the selected ring has a visual cue that verifies the decision.

Step 5: Press the + and - sensors to change the temperature

Use the + and - sensors or buttons on the control panel to change the temperature. With the precision temperature control that it frequently offers, you can precisely set the desired heat level. Play around with the temperature settings to get the cooking results you want. You can begin cooking once the temperature has been set. You won't have to wait long for the cookware to reach the correct temperature on it because of how quickly they heat up. You can now start boiling, simmering, frying, or sauteing according to your preferred cooking technique. Keep in mind to stir the dish occasionally and lower the heat if necessary.

Step 6: Press and hold down the power button one more to turn the induction cooktop off once you are done using it

It is time to turn off the induction stove after you have finished cooking. The hob will turn off after a brief period of holding down the power button. Make sure the stove is always turned off entirely. You can quickly clean the cooker with a soft cloth or sponge after it has cooled down. Do not use anything abrasive that could scratch the hob surface. Make sure the hob is clean and ready for use by wiping up any spills or food residue.

Pros and cons of the induction hob

Induction hobs are the modern, effective kitchen partners to beat your loneliness when living abroad. It has something unique to offer, regardless of whether you're a cooking fanatic looking for lightning-fast results or a safety-conscious person seeking comfort. Let's explore the fascinating world of cooking, learn about induction cooktops’ pros and cons, and a few considerations to keep in mind.

PROS:

1. Experience quick cooking as it heats up quickly, saving you vital time while you prepare meals. Be prepared for quick boiling, quick simmering, and mind-blowingly searing stir-fries.

2. Control every aspect of your culinary creations with accurate temperature changes. With it, you can precisely control the heat levels for everything from delicate sauces to flawless searing, resulting in consistently excellent results.

3. Say goodbye to accidental burns! Induction cooktops put safety first by staying cool to the touch, reducing the possibility of accidents in the kitchen. For added peace of mind, several models also come equipped with safety features like automatic shut-off and residual heat indicators.

CONS:

1. Not every cookware is compatible with it, so keep that in mind when you start using one. To fully utilize induction cooking, make sure you have magnetic materials, such as stainless steel or cast iron.

2. It has a number of advantages, although they are generally more expensive upfront than regular hobs. However, through long-term utility bill savings, its energy efficiency can help recoup the initial expenditure.

3. Be careful that some models may operate with a faint humming noise. Even though the noise level is typically low and frequently covered by cooking noises, it's important to be aware in case you prefer quieter kitchen surroundings.

For international students, induction hobs are a necessity due to their speedy cooking and precise control. Enter the realm of effortless cooking for a better and easy-going student life! Do not forget to save money on groceries as a student!

Frequently Asked Questions

How is an induction hob different from stove hobs?

Unlike stovetop hobs, which rely on open flames or electric coils for heating, it employs electromagnetic induction to heat cookware directly.

‍

Are induction hobs energy-efficient?

Yes, they are very energy-efficient because they send heat directly to the cookware with no heat loss.

‍

What type of cookware is compatible with induction hobs?

Cast iron or stainless steel cookwares composed of ferromagnetic materials are compatible with it.

‍

Can I use induction hobs for all types of cooking techniques, such as frying, boiling, simmering, and searing?

Definitely! Similar to conventional stovetops, they are adaptable and can be used for a variety of cooking styles.

‍

Are there any safety precautions to keep in mind when using induction hobs?

Be mindful of the residual heat left on the surface after cooking, and make sure the induction hob is off when not in use. To prevent inadvertent activation, keep non-compatible or empty cookware off the hob.
